2004
SEASON In the fifth leaf of the vineyard a high fruiting wire held canes with a bud count
intended to yield approximately 2 to 3.5 tons/acre for the 2004 harvest. Canes
from lower spurs were retained for 2005.
Buds burst March 5, three
days later than 2003. Early flowering set fruit in eight days. July 4th was
declared the beginning of veraison, right on time.
The great Russian River Valley weather continued through September 5th, the
target date for harvest to begin, calculated by counting the
degree days needed to achieve balance between sugars and acids with fully
developed phenolics for the maximum color, flavor and aroma that the winemaker has
in mind. Harvest went without a hitch (other than exhaustion). The fruit
came off perfectly over 12 days through the middle of September. Grapes were
harvested at night and crushed still-cold, early in the morning . The must
was cold-soaked in the new cold room, where 20 tons of refrigeration kept it
at less than 45°F for 6 to 8 days prior to fermentation at the winery.
